LED Lights to Light Up Your Lives

by - April 11, 2018

Introduction: What are LED Lights?

LED lights are considered to be the latest technology in the energy efficient lighting segment. The LED words stand for the acronym ‘Light Emitting Diode’. This is a semiconductor device which converts the electricity into the light that we receive.

The LED lights are considered to be extremely energy efficient since they utilize approximately 85% lesser energy as compared to the halogen or the incandescent lighting. This means that there would be significant savings being done on the electric bills. The LED lights even have a comparatively longer lifespan as compared to the other kinds of lighting as indicated in the list below.

Lighting technology    Estimated lifespan*
LED 25,000-50,000 hours
CFL 8,000-15,000 hours
Halogen 1,000-5,000 hours
Incandescent 1,000 hours

Different types of lights

Incandescent light

The Incandescent light globes appear to be similar to the traditional ‘Edison’ cast light bulb. It has a filament that is strung across the two metal bars that are located in the center of the globe.

Because of the government regulations, an individual can no longer be able to purchase the standard incandescent globes. The reasons for the same was that these globes were very inefficient as they were only able to convert approximately 5-10% of the energy which they created into the light, while the rest was transformed into heat. The outcome was that there was an extreme wastage of electricity.

The Halolux light

The Halogen globes will appear much similar to the incandescent globes, but they use an envelope filled up with Halogen. The low-pressure Halogen gas helps to burn up the filament in order to produce the visible light. To add to this, there is a regular 12-volt downlight which has not been altered to be the energy saving fittings and are possibly becoming the halogen lights.

The halogen globes have been able to typically replace the incandescent globes. For instance, in the pendant lights, the chandeliers, and the spotlights. The new energy efficient halogens – also known as the eco-halogens – are now easily available and they are almost 30% more efficient as compared to the incandescent globes.

The CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) - Envirolux light

The CFLs are the fluorescent tubes that are twisted into shape so as to fit a standard light fixture. The CFLs are almost 80% more energy efficient as compared to to the incandescent lights. But the CFL lights have some limitations, like the dimming size as well as the appearance.

LEDs used for the purpose of lighting

The LEDs are incorporated into the bulbs and the fixtures for the purpose of general lighting applications. Although small in size, the LEDs offer a wide variety of unique design opportunities. Some of the LED bulb solutions might physically resemble the familiar light bulbs and a better match with the appearance of the traditional light bulbs. Some of the LED light fixtures might have LEDs that are built in as the permanent lighting source. There are even combined approaches when a non-traditional “light” or a replaceable light source format is utilized and specially made for a different fixture. The LEDs offer a great opportunity for the innovation in the area of lighting to form the factors and fit a broader breadth of the applications than the traditional lighting technologies.

LEDs and Heat

LEDs use the heat sinks in order to absorb the heat generated by the LED lights and dissipate the same into the environment. This prevents the LEDs from overheating or burning out. The thermal management is usually a single important factor in the efficient performance of the LED across its lifetime.
