Shield Your Home with Waterproofing Membrane

by - July 12, 2018

Waterproofing membrane is one of the inventions in the architecture industry that has increased building’s life. These membranes are thin sheets of watertight material. Water penetration if occurs in buildings can cause enormous damage to the structure. If the home itself or terrace floors come in constant contact with water can cause damage and the structure might collapse in a long run. A home is not only a building but a special part of everybody’s life, everyone wants to protect and shield their home from any damage. This also reduces the risk of any incident. Waterproofing membrane is one such product which ensures that you are free from any seepage of rainwater and ensures the strength of your structure.

Waterproofing membranes are laid over any structure to protect it from water seepage. It can be laid on flat terraces and below floor tiles so that the water infiltration does not destroy the main construction of the building. These membranes are laid in such a manner that the water flows to a drainage. This ensures that water does not collect over the surface.

Different types of waterproofing membranes:

These membranes are not only thin sheets but can also be liquid based. There is a wide variety available in the market from which you can choose the best one as per utility.

  • The most popular one is the sheet-based membranes. As the name suggests these are thin sheets which are laid over surfaces. The material used is thin elastic, tear resistant and flexible which can be laid seamlessly over any surface. These membranes when laid in small rows; the gap between each membrane is filled by a hot air gun. Joining them properly is very necessary to avoid infiltration from these small gaps.
  • The sheet-based membranes are further subcategorized. They vary in thickness and also in use of a material.
  • The most famous among these is the bituminous made membranes which are assembled using coal tar.
  • PVC based membranes are also popular.
  • Composite membranes are fabric based waterproofing membrane. The fabric is coated with a chemical which gives it resistant. These membranes are more durable and also provide an additional benefit of tear resistivity.
  • The liquid-based waterproofing membrane comes in spray form. These membranes are sprayed over any surface like paint.

Difference between the two types of membrane:

The two types although made for a similar purpose are different in application and usage.

  • The liquid-based membrane can seamlessly be sprayed without botheration of filling the joints.
  • The sheet-based ones are quality assured. They are factory made and their quality is consistent. The joints if done properly make the best choice.
  • The waterproofing membranes come in different thicknesses; varying from 2mm to 4mm. A thickness of the liquid-based membranes can be controlled as per requirements whereas there is no such flexibility in sheet-based membranes.
  • The application of liquid-based membranes is quick and easy.

Which membrane is better?

People are generally confused about the choice of membranes. For those who are thinking to shield their buildings with the waterproofing solutions, liquid-based membranes are better than sheet-based ones. A few things should never be neglected while laying a membrane.

  • The thickness of the liquid-based membranes should be constant everywhere.
  • Also, it should be of just right thickness because if it remains too thin the chances to damage are high.
  • While assembling the sheet-based membranes, the joints need to be carefully done.
The waterproofing membranes are the latest and the best solution for every homeowner because this provides safety and security to one’s heaven on earth.
