Nowadays homeowners are spending money on installation of a hot water system in their homes to get rid of the continuous flow of hot water in their homes. You should know that you cannot install a hot water system by your own so you can contact the dealer with whom you are purchasing the system so that he can send a professional expert.

The Steps to Follow

There is a specific process to follow during hot water system installation.
  • Shut off the main water supply valve and the gas to the water heater. With a quarter turn of the shutoff valve, the handle should be at a right angle to the pipe. Make sure you open a faucet at the lowest floor to drain the lines.
  • Drain the water in the tank by attaching a garden hose. Take proper precautionary measures as the water will be scalding hot.
  • Cut off the water lines by unscrewing the vent pipe from the vent hood. Move it and cut the hot and cold-water lines using a tube cutter.
  • Attach the new temperature and pressure relief valve and a copper discharge pipe with Teflon tape and screw it tightly.
  • Attach all pipe assemblies to the hot water outlet and cold-water inlet ports at the top of the tank. Use short plastic lined nipples to protect against galvanic corrosion, or if you have hard water or if the local codes require it.
To finish the hot water system installation, attach the water lines; reattach the vent and the gas lines. In the end, check for any back drafting as most systems will have a natural draft to draw the combustion fumes up the flue. Check for leaks and bubbles at connections and then light the pilot.

The Need of a Pro

Knowing about the process now, you may think whether or not you will need to hire a professional for hot water system installation. Ideally, for safe and effective installation you will need to hire both a professional plumber as well as a qualified electrician.

Even if you have a gas or a solar hot water system with a gas booster, you will need to get such professionals for the installation job. They will know the requirements as per the state code because the federal government is currently endeavoring to phase out electrical hot water systems especially in those areas where you get natural gas easily.

The most significant reason to hire a professional plumber for hot water system installation is for warranty and safety. Most manufacturers will consider the terms of the warranty as void if you do not install the system by a professional plumber. Therefore, it is wise to be safe and hire a professional plumber.
