Class 1 Electric Bike: Class 1 has an electric motor that helps you when you start pedalling. But it stops assisting you when you hit 20 miles per hour speed. Class 1 electric bikes are the most popular ones. You can ride them anywhere you want. They are also quite affordable and will not break your bank if you wish to buy one. If this is your first electric bike, it is better to get a class 1 electric bike.

Class 2 Electric Bike: Comes with two modes - pedal-assisted mode and throttle-powered mode. Like class 1 bikes, the pedal will stop assisting you after 20 miles per hour. These can be used pretty much everywhere, just like the class 1 electric bike.

Class 3 Electric Bike: It has only one mode - pedal-assisted mode. But the pedal will drive the vehicle until you hit 28 miles per hour. Class 3 electric bikes are more powerful and have better speed than class 2 and class 1 electric bike. These bikes are mostly opted by errand runners and who tend to carry lots of heavy things on their bikes. As you can already tell, better performance and more speed mean the bike has a higher price tag.

If you intend to buy a class 3 electric bike, do know that you cannot use them everywhere. You cannot use them on mountain trails.

The charging time depends on the size of the battery. If the cargo e-bikes have a large battery, the charging time will be longer than most batteries. Usually, the electric bike batteries get charged within 5 hours.

If you plan to commute for hours, it is wise to carry a charger with you. Fast chargers reduce the time taken to charge the battery to full. The time may be reduced to just 2 hours from 5 hours. You can buy a fast charger from a mechanical shop. If you do not want to buy an extra charger, you can invest in an extra battery. This way, you will have a backup. When one battery is dead, you can use the other one. Some bikes can support two batteries at once. You can buy a bike that supports two batteries instead of one. The battery can be integrated, or it can be External. External batteries are easier to replace and charge, but if you opt for a bike that has an integrated battery, you may have extra space to keep your bottle or your bag.

Pedal-Assist Levels

Usually, electric bikes have three pedal assist levels - eco mode, turbo mode, and boost mode. Eco mode helps you save the battery as you ride around town to complete your errands. In both turbo and boost mode, more battery power is used, but it offers higher speed and performance.
